I d also learned to express affection openly, fight and make up two seconds later,
and say things like, We ll cross that bridge when we come to it when the future
started freaking me out. And I d learned to properly and safely swing a belt, a crop, and
a cane, prepare ropes for bondage, and apply actual designed-for-nipples clamps.
I wasn t a perfect boyfriend or a perfect dom. I wasn t a great Hula-Hooper or a
great teacher.
But I was learning.
And I was a damn good stage manager.
Hoop Hollander was lucky I could occasionally take a break from filling out
applications and grading quizzes to SM and run lights for them.
The music was ending. Lights twelve point five, go. Thirteen, go.
One by one the spots went off, until only Sim was still lit.

Quicker than I or anyone in the audience could follow, he leaned forward,
bringing the hoop up around his chest. He extended one leg behind him and one arm in
front of him, launched the hoop onto his finger tip, then tossed it backward and caught
it on his toe, where it spun, catching the last of the light.
I let the spot linger on him for an extra second, seeing him, the hoop, the smile on
his face, how easy it was for him to love and be loved.
Then I hit Go.
